Habitat Restoration

COBEC is deeply committed to the restoration of degraded coastal habitats, which are critical for biodiversity, fisheries, climate resilience, and local livelihoods. Our Habitat Restoration Programme focuses on mangrove ecosystems, beaches, estuaries, and other important ecological areas that have been impacted by human activities and climate change.

Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and wetlands serve as breeding and nursery grounds for marine life, act as carbon sinks, and protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges. Beaches, on the other hand, are essential for sea turtle nesting and support local tourism economies. Unfortunately, many of these habitats have suffered from deforestation, plastic pollution, sand harvesting, and unregulated development.

Beach clean-up

COBEC’s restoration strategy involves:

  • Establishing community-managed mangrove nurseries
  • Organizing large-scale mangrove replanting campaigns
  • Conducting regular beach clean-up events
  • Removing blockages in tidal creeks to restore natural water flow
  • Raising awareness about the ecological and economic value of coastal ecosystems
Community planting mangroves

Our approach is community-inclusive and science-based. Local knowledge is combined with ecological data to select suitable restoration sites and species. Community members are trained in nursery management, planting techniques, and post-restoration monitoring. Through this, we foster ownership, build capacity, and ensure sustainability. Restoring habitats is not just about planting trees—it is about rebuilding ecological integrity, improving community resilience, and laying the foundation for sustainable livelihoods.
