Fisheries Management

The COBEC Fisheries Management Programme is a flagship initiative that promotes sustainable, community-led fisheries governance across Kenya’s northern coastline. Rooted in COBEC’s broader vision of environmental stewardship and community empowerment, the programme focuses on restoring fish stocks, enhancing marine biodiversity, and improving fisher livelihoods through participatory monitoring, co-management, and capacity building.

Artisanal fisheries are a vital source of food, income, and cultural identity for coastal communities. However, overfishing, destructive gear, habitat degradation, and weak governance structures have led to declining fish stocks and increased vulnerability for fishing-dependent households.
